Many cities, townships and municipalities have adopted tree cutting by-laws designed to preserve existing trees and prevent their unnecessary destruction. These by-laws pertain to tree preservation in urban environments as well as along waterways and specially zoned areas. Penalties for not adhering to the by-laws vary and can be quite severe. Exemptions to by-laws are allowed but in most cases require the involvement of a certified arborist.
